Got 'Em! Need 'Em! Season 2, Episode 12
Broadcast Date: Feb. 22, 2011
Time: 15 minutes, 2 seconds
Topic Discussed
Mick Kern and I talk about the ins and outs of player collecting. We refer to my "Career in Cards" about Chris Chelios, which you can see here. Chelios is the player who I try to get every card of (or at least as many as I can).
If the above player does not work, you can get the clip here. Just right click on the link, and select either "Save As..." or open it in a new tab or window.
Thanks to Mick Kern and NHL Home Ice (XM 204) for providing me with this clip.

As a player collector myself, I enjoyed the radio interview and could relate to the considerable checklist to chase.
Grant Fuhr did have some cards of him depicted as a Flame (99/00 Prism, 99/00 Topps/OPC and I believe 99/00 Victory to name a few).
I'm curious to know if you collect 'show' cards of Chelios? Or do you stick mainly to regular issue cards? If so, I have about 7 or 8 Chelios 'show' cards from the Pacific products of the late 90's.
Cheers.
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what is a "show" card?
It would be a card that one would get at one of the bigger card shows. Some of them have a foil stamp on them (usually numbered out of 10) and these cards were only issued at the show. They are normally cards from existing sets from that year.
There are also embossed show cards in which an existing cards would have an emboss of the show emblem and date placed on it. These are tougher to gauge in terms of scarcity as they are not numbered.
Here's a scan of a stamped show card...

The stamp is a little tough to see, but it is just above the auto.
If you'd like, I can scan the Chelios ones I have to show you (tough to say how they will scan though as the embossing is tough to see).
Cheers.
OK, that makes sense.
I would love to trade you for any Chris Chelios "show" cards you'd be willing to part with. No need to scan them.
I don't think I'll ever get EVERY Chelios card, but the more odd cards I can find, the better.
Drop me a line at sjb44 AT hotmail DOT com, and maybe we can work out a trade.
Sounds good. I'll track them down to confirm how many I have and from what sets.
I hear you about getting 'one of every card', but the search and discovery of new cards to add to the list is definitely a fun aspect of the hobby.
Cheers.
