Ten years ago, I interviewed goaltender Wendell Young. He played in the NHL from 1985 to 1995--most notably with the Pittsburgh Penguins during their Stanley Cup era.
At this point, Young was in his last year of professional hockey, playing with the minor-league Chicago Wolves The Wolves were in the old International Hockey League (IHL) at the time.
I attended a charity dinner hosted by the Wolves, and sat next to Young. After dinner, I interviewed the seasoned veteran over beer (his treat). I was a senior in college at the time, and the webmaster of the school's paper, The Columbia Chronicle.
The next day, my school paper's Sports Editor got fired (he had it coming), but this caused the Assistant Sports Editor to quit. So I stepped up and was Sports Editor for a few weeks, and decided to print my interview with Young.
You can read a PDF of the interview here--but I must warn you: this was before I knew anything about journalism. It almost hurts me to read this now--was I really that bad?--but I think longtime hockey fans will enjoy it nonetheless.

Very nice job. It's always good when a guy will take the time to answer a few questions for a small time college newspaper. It's also nice when said athlete pays for beer.
