1990-91 Upper Deck Prototype Cards
Prior to the release of their inaugural hockey set, Upper Deck issued prototype cards of Wayne Gretzky and Patrick Roy. The two cards were given out at the National Sports Card Convention in Arlington, Texas in July 1990 - roughly four months before Upper Deck Hockey would hit the shelves. The prototypes helped generate excitement and anticipation for what would be one of the most memorable hockey releases ever. However, these cards are not without their own share of controversy. Very good article. At the time the cards came out, the prototypes were quite sought-after. I remember trying to get them back in the day but rarely finding them available at card shows or in Sports Collector's Digest.
Boy - do I remember those. I did see them prior to the release of '90-91 UD, so they were definitely available. I picked up a pair at the LCS in about 1991 after I'd gotten hooked on that set. I think I paid about $100 apiece at that time.
I've never seen that holder before.
I vaguely remember seeing these two cards in the holder at a show back in 1990. I was a kid then, so I don't remember if it had the UPPER DECK and all that printed on the holder itself. I think the dealer wanted $160 for the pair, which might as well been $1,000 back then!
The thing is, now you can find these two cards WITHOUT the holder for a few dollars each on eBay.
Great post Sal, learned quite a bit from reading this one! Not to mention I have two new cards to chase now...
I certainly remember seeing those cards on boxes of 90-91 UD. Then the odd ones would pop up in card displays in the local shops and they were usually about 60 for the pair if I remember right. I never ended up buying them until recently when I was able to get Gretzky for 8 bucks off ebay.
Not sure if I will go after Roy, but I certainly love the promo photo way more than the final product pick of Gretz. Without a doubt, the Gretzky promo is in my top 10 favourite of all-time.
The only thing I bought between 1990 and 1994 that is worth even a fraction of what I paid for it is the vintage. I still keep the UD promo cards together with all the Lindros Future Superstars in a special box. It's kind of a sentimental thing.
Happy birthday, Sal!
